Preventing Gum Disease

Periodontal disease affects most people at some point in their lives. But it’s not inevitable – a systematic regimen of home and professional care will keep your gums healthy for a lifetime.

  • The most important single factor in the prevention of periodontal disease is the daily careful flossing of your teeth and brushing of your teeth and tongue. A soft-bristled brush should be used for a minimum of two minutes, preferably after each meal and before bedtime, but at least twice per day.  Proper technique with a brush and floss will save you from dental problems.  If you are unsure about the technique you employ, ask us to demonstrate the recommended method.
  • Secondly, avoid use of all tobacco products as they are one of the leading causes of periodontal(gum) disease and tooth loss.
  • Thirdly, avoid sweet, sticky foods between meals and refrain from excessive use of alcohol.
  • Finally, routine dental visits for professional teeth cleaning is an important part of gum disease prevention.  The removal of tartar(calculus) by a dental professional is essential for maintaining a gum disesase free mouth.

Studies show that these four areas are the most important areas to focus on for prevention of periodontal disease.  Together we can keep your smile healthy for a lifetime!
