Porcelains And Ceramics: Their Role In Modern Dentistry

Our ancient ancestors recognized the extraordinary uses of porcelains and ceramics for making things strong, beautiful and resistant. That why our ancestors used these materials to make the finest vases and ceramic potteries. These days there’s a lot more to porcelain than making pretty vases. Modern dentistry has found many new uses for these materials and has put their strength and beauty at work to make radiant smiles.

Porcelain Restorations

The properties of porcelain and ceramic make them an excellent choice for restorative dental procedures. Porcelain can be used to make strong and natural-looking veneers, crowns, implants and bridges. With modern laboratory techniques porcelains can be made to resist high chewing stress resulting in long lasting natural looking restorations.  Using sophisticated CAD computer programs, our on site laboratory technicians can customize porcelain restorations for you while you wait.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain and ceramic can also be used to improve the appearance of natural teeth. Veneers or laminates can close spaces, repair chips and cover discolorations including tetracycline stains. The results are far stronger and more natural looking than other alternatives. In certain cases contact thin porcelain can be applied with very little or no modification to natural tooth structure.

Tooth Colored Braces

More recently tooth colored porcelains are being used to replace stainless steel in certain types of braces. Ask us if this orthodontic technique is for you.

The more the science and technology of dentistry advances, the more we realize that our ancestors were on to a good thing when they discovered the wonderful properties of porcelains and ceramics. We’ll probably find more new uses for these materials in the years to come.
