The TDG Education Bursary


The Tuxedo Dental Group (TDG) Education Bursary is awarded to a deserving student, accepted into a post-secondary education program, who has demonstrated previous high academic achievement and strong leadership.

The recipient will be known to TDG and have a definitive educationally-based career plan, enjoy a broad base of interests and accomplishments, and be involved in the community.

We are proud to present to you the latest recipients of the Bursary!



2016-17 Meghan Hodgins

Meghan attended high school at College Sturgeon Heights Collegiate. She graduated in 2016 with an above 90 average every year and outstanding volunteer service. Throughout high school, Meghan volunteered as student ambassador helping grade 9 students adjust to the new environment. In her grade 12 year, she and other students in the school participated in the community’s Christmas fundraiser called Sam's Christmas with Project Echo. The students' fundraising raised over $12,000 and provided many boxes of food and toys for families in the community. She continues to volunteer with the St. John's ambulance.

Meghan was also a part of many school sports teams, mainly the hockey team. Meghan was the captain of her high school hockey team and led them to their Winnipeg Free Press Division Champion title. She also played hockey in the community as well with AA Titans.

 Meghan completed her first year of university at the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Science. She is currently spending the summer in a Prep 101 MCAT course preparing for her future in Medicine. She is also currently preparing to enter the Genetics program and receive her Honors in Genetics.





2015 Roxanne Lacroix

Roxanne grew up in Ile-des-Chênes, Manitoba and graduated from Collège Régional Gabrielle-Roy in 2011. In 2015, she completed her Bachelor of Arts with a major in French at the Université de Saint-Boniface.
Currently, she is enrolled in her first year of Education at the Université de Saint-Boniface. Roxanne has chosen this field of study due to her tremendous interest in, and passion for educators! Her influences include a nine year tenure coaching rhythmic gymnastics, being a daycare educator and an educational assistant.

In addition to her academic achievements, she has been involved in sports her entire life. She was a competitive rhythmic gymnast for eight years and earned many awards. In 2007 and 2011, she represented Canada, along with her teammates, in the World Gymnaestrada, hosted in Austria and in Switzerland.

 She was also a cheerleader for several years. Currently, she plays volleyball in a Co-Ed league and owns a gymnastics club with her sister where they coach twice a week. Roxanne is thrilled that she will be completing her Bachelor of Education in June 2017, and would like to thank the Tuxedo Dental Group for contributing to her academic success!




2014/15 Darryll Iwaszkiw

Darryll is currently entering her third year of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba and is thrilled to be pursuing her childhood dream of becoming a dentist.

Born and raised in Charleswood, Darryll’s early interests revolved around school and sports, particularly mathematics and gymnastics. Darryll has always been passionate for community outreach, which has become a central part of her life. While completing high school at Oak Park, Darryll served as school president, coached gymnastics, and volunteered in an assisted living community. After graduating from Oak Park in 2008, Darryll attended Queen’s University, where she received her Honours degree with distinction in Mathematics in 2012. Darryll also received the Nan Skelding scholarship in her third year at Queen's for achieving the highest average grade amongst women in the Queen’s Mathematics program. At Queen’s Darryll volunteered for various social programs, such as the Kaleidoscope program for childhood literacy and a disability awareness program. During summers Darryll worked as an access worker with the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities.

Darryll moved back to Winnipeg and began Dentistry at the University of Manitoba in 2012 and has been on the Dean's Honours List for both of her years in the faculty. Darryll volunteered with the Winnipeg Interprofessional Student-Run Health (WISH) Clinic and helped organize wellness events in Point Douglas. Last year Darryll helped establish and served as co-chair for the new Winnipeg chapter of Oral Health Total Health (OHTH), a federal non-profit organization with a mission to advocate, educate, and improve the oral health care for people with disabilities. Darryll and the OHTH team orchestrated a highly successful first annual “Sharing Smiles Day” in April 2012 to raise awareness about oral health for people with disabilities living in Manitoba.

Working with people with disabilities has always been a passion of Darryll's and it is something she intends on carrying forward in her career as a dentist. 


2013/14 Kai S. Olson, B.A. (Hons), M.A.

Kai OlsonKai is currently pursuing both a Bachelor of Common Law and a Bachelor of Civil Law (LLB/BCL) at the Faculty of Law at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. 

A graduate of Gimli High School, he completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History at the University of Winnipeg in 2010 and a Master of Arts in History at the University of Toronto in 2011. Before starting his legal studies Kai participated in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba Internship Program where he gained significant non-partisan experience working for the Office of the Auditor General of Manitoba and later a political party. Most recently, Kai served as an aide to a Senator at the Senate of Canada.

In addition to his academic achievements, Kai was involved in a variety of student organizations throughout his university studies, including a term as Vice-President of the University of Winnipeg History Students’ Association. During high school he was an active Royal Canadian Air Cadet and earned both a Glider Pilot and Private Pilot License through the program. Kai also received the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award from Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex in 2007. 

 

2012/13 Erin Riediger, B.Env.D.

Erin Riediger Erin grew up in Charleswood and graduated from Shaftesbury High School in 2006. While in high school she trained in both modern dance and classical ballet and graduated from the Junior Professional Program at the School of Contemporary Dancers in 2006. In 2011 she completed her Bachelor of Environmental Design degree in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba and was accepted into the Master of Interior Design program with a University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship. She aims to graduate with her professional interior design masters degree in 2013.

In addition to her studies Erin is Co-president of the Interior Design Associations of Students. This student organization provides students with connections to the professional design community and organizes special events. Erin dances and choreographs for Prairie Dancers, a local dance troupe in her free time. She has also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and performed back of house tasks for local performance companies.

 

2010/11 Heather Maxted

Heather Maxted Heather graduated (honours with distinction) in June 2010 from the advanced placement program at Shaftsbury High School in Winnipeg. She scored among the top 25% in Canada for the Fryer, Cayley, and Fermat mathematics competitions offered by the University of Waterloo. She received early acceptance to the University of Manitoba and will enter University 1 this fall on scholarship. Heather is registered in the pre-requisite courses required for entrance to the Faculty of Law.

In addition to her remarkable academic achievements, Heather is an accomplished athlete. In each of the past 3 years she has been a competitive dancer both Provincially (4 Gold and 2 Gold Honours) and Nationally (Silver, 2 Gold, 3 Elite Gold). She is a Junior Women’s competitive curler playing third on the Shannon Birchard rink. Their team have been competitors at the Manitoba Junior Women’s Provincial Championships for the past 4 years. In 2009/10 their team qualified and won Gold at the Manitoba Games in addition to winning the Junior Women’s Provincial Championship. They will represent Manitoba in the under 18 International Bonspiel in Toronto in 2011.

2009/10 Amanda Bowyer, R.D.A.

Amanda Bowyer Amanda grew up in Southdale and Graduated from J.H. Bruns Collegiate. In 2006 she Graduated with Honours from Red River Community College, obtaining her R.D.A. certificate (Dental Assisting) with an Orthodontic Module. Amanda began working full time with TDG directly after graduation. In 2009 Amanda and her husband Peter welcomed their son Ethan into the world!!

In addition to providing chairside assisting, Amanda manages the Tuxedo Dental Group Youth Hygiene Program, providing dental hygiene care for the children and youth in a “kids friendly” environment.

Amanda was accepted to CDI College this fall working to obtain her Scaling Module for December 2010. She hopes to be among the first graduating class in this new advancement program.


 

2008/09 Mr. Tom Janaway, B. Phys. Ed.

Tom Janaway Tom grew up in Charleswood and graduated from Oak Park High School in Winnipeg in 2001.  During his time there he was a member of the Oak Park Raiders Football and Hockey teams.  He then earned a Bachelors in Physical Education from the University of Manitoba in 2005.  Tom subsequently applied and was accepted to the University of Manitoba Faculty of Dentistry in 2008.  He has worked as a dental laboratory technician and as a Certified Personal Trainer(C.P.T.) at the Rady Jewish Community Centre. 

Congrats Tom on your acceptance to Dentistry!!

UPDATE:  Tom has completed his second year of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba.




 

2007/08 Mr. Chris Murata, B. Comm(Hons.), CPA, CMA

Chris Murata Chris graduated from St. Paul's High School '00 in Winnipeg and then earned his Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.) degree, majoring in Accounting and Finance from the University of Manitoba in '04.  He then joined The Tuxedo Dental Group as our Accountant, a role that has expanded to include the designation of Office Manger.  Chris has now enrolled in the Certified Managerial Accountant (CMA) program which he plans to complete by 2010.

UPDATE:  Chris completed the CMA program in August 2010.  At the CMA Society's Annual Gala Award Dinner, he and the members of his research team were presented with the Robert Half Team Achievement award for the highest combined mark in Manitoba for their Board Report and Presentation.

Chris accepted a promotion to be the General Manager of our entire clinic and laboratory.  Congrats Chris!

 

2006/07 Ms. Emily Kenny, B.F.A.

Emily Kenny Emily graduated from Kelvin High School in 2001 and then went on to the University of Manitoba where she earned her Bachelor in Fine Arts, majoring in Ceramics.  She is currently in her second year of a three year program at George Brown College in Toronto and will graduate as a Registered Dental Technologist(R.D.T.) in 2009.

Emily recently earned the rank of Sargeant in the Reserves as a member of the Queens Own Rifles in Toronto.  She mentored in our on-site laboratory during the summer of 2007 leaving no doubt in our minds that she will be an asset to any dental laboratory in the fabrication of beautiful cosmetic restorations. Way to go Emm!

UPDATE:  Emily obtained her R.D.T. designation in 2009 from George Brown College. She is currently a ceramist in a commercial dental laboratory in Toronto.  Congrats Emily!
